Chickasaw Cultural Center — Jefferson Peace Medal

The Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma, houses a Jefferson Peace Medal in the Holisso research center. Peace medals were among the most important diplomatic gifts carried by Lewis and Clark, presented to tribal leaders as symbols of friendship and allegiance to the United States. The medals featured President Jefferson’s likeness on one side and clasped hands with the words “Peace and Friendship” on the reverse.
