Clark’s Sketch of the Great Falls of the Missouri
William Clark • 1805
Lewis made a rough sketch of the Great Falls during the expedition, lamenting his inability to capture its grandeur: “I wished for the pencil of Salvator Rosa or the pen of Thomson, that I might be enabled to give to the enlightened world some just idea of this truly magnificent and sublimely grand object.” Clark also sketched the falls and surrounding area, providing important geographic documentation of the portage route.
