Created for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, this painting depicts the burial of Sergeant Charles Floyd on August 20, 1804—the only member of the expedition to die during the journey. Floyd likely died of a ruptured appendix near present-day Sioux City, Iowa. Haynes is renowned for his historically accurate depictions of the expedition, with his work appearing in museum displays, publications, and interpretive signs along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.
