Indian Encampment, Shoshone Village
Albert Bierstadt • 1860
Bierstadt painted this scene from plein-air studies and photographs he had made during his first western excursion in 1859, when he participated in the U.S. government’s Lander expedition. It is set on the Sweetwater River with the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming in the background. Robert L. Stuart, a supporter of the Union cause, purchased the painting in 1861 at a “Pro Patria” sale.
