Meriwether Lewis
Charles Willson Peale • 1807
Life portrait of Meriwether Lewis commissioned by Charles Willson Peale for his Philadelphia Museum. Lewis wears a fur-trimmed coat, likely an ermine tippet given to him by Cameahwait, chief of the Lemhi Shoshone. This is the most widely reproduced and recognized portrait of Lewis, painted shortly after the expedition’s triumphant return.
