Sacagawea at the Bitterroot
Edgar Samuel Paxson • c. 1905
Paxson was one of the first artists to depict Sacagawea prominently in expedition art. This painting shows her guiding the Corps through the challenging Bitterroot Mountains crossing in September 1805. Paxson spent decades in Montana and had deep familiarity with the landscapes the expedition traversed, lending his work an authenticity that later artists would build upon.
