Up the Jefferson
John Ford Clymer • c. 1970
In this painting, Clymer illustrates the summer of 1805 as the expedition proceeds up the Jefferson River (named by Lewis for President Jefferson). The Corps laboriously pulled their boats through shallow, winding waters, often wading waist-deep in the current. Clymer was known for his meticulous historical research, studying the journals extensively and visiting the actual locations before painting each scene.
