Private Whitehouse’s Journal

Joseph Whitehouse
1804-1805 During Expedition Newberry Library, Chicago
Private Joseph Whitehouse's journal provides an enlisted man's perspective on the expedition, including details about daily camp life, food preparation, and interactions with Native peoples that are absent from the officers' journals. A revised, more polished version of the journal was discovered in 1966.

Two versions of Whitehouse’s journal exist: an original rough journal and a later paraphrased version that Whitehouse apparently prepared for publication (which never occurred). The journal provides unique observations about the daily experiences of ordinary soldiers on the expedition, including details about food, weather, camp duties, and morale that the commanding officers often omitted from their own accounts.
