Eve of Departure from Pittsburgh
August 30, 1803
Lewis made his final arrangements in Pittsburgh before the next day’s departure. He settled accounts with merchants, sent a final letter to President Jefferson reporting his readiness, and reviewed the route down the Ohio River with experienced rivermen.
The journey ahead would take Lewis down the Ohio River to meet William Clark at Clarksville, Indiana Territory, then up the Mississippi to the mouth of the Missouri — the gateway to the unknown West.
