Lewis grew increasingly anxious about the falling water levels on the Ohio River. Every day of delay meant shallower water and more difficulty navigating downstream. The boat builder promised the keelboat would be ready within days, but Lewis had heard such promises before.
Despite the delays, Lewis remained focused on the mission ahead, knowing that the success of Jefferson’s vision for western exploration depended on departing before conditions worsened further.
