Preparations Continue at Pittsburgh
August 24, 1803
Lewis continued the frustrating wait in Pittsburgh. He occupied himself with organizing the expedition’s scientific instruments, which included a chronometer, sextant, compass, and thermometer — tools essential for mapping the uncharted territory ahead.
President Jefferson had personally instructed Lewis in the use of these instruments during training sessions in Philadelphia earlier that spring with Andrew Ellicott, one of America’s foremost astronomers.
