Delaware Nation
The Delaware, or Lenape, are an Algonquian-speaking people whose ancestral homeland encompassed the Delaware River valley, portions of present-day New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. Known as the "Grandfathers" of the Algonquian nations, the Lenape were progressively displaced westward through a long series of treaties and removals beginning in the colonial era. By the early 19th century, significant Lenape communities had relocated to Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri, where they entered into treaties with the United States regarding their western lands. Today, the Delaware Nation and Delaware Tribe of Indians are headquartered in Oklahoma.
