Treaty with the Potawatomi, 1815

This treaty was signed at Portage des Sioux between the U.S. and Poutawatomie leaders to re-establish peace and friendship after the War of 1812. It mutually forgave past hostilities while renewing amity between American citizens and the tribe. The parties agreed to exchange all prisoners captured during the recent war. The Poutawatomies also reaffirmed all previous treaties made with the U.S. Overall, the treaty aimed to fully restore positive diplomatic ties with the tribe following tribal involvement against the U.S. in the War of 1812 conflict.

Treaty with the Ottawa, etc., 1816

The Treaty with the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi of 1816 was signed on August 24, 1816 between these tribes and the United States. It settled a land dispute stemming from an 1804 treaty with the Sauk and Fox by having the tribes cede disputed lands to the U.S. In return, the U.S. agreed to pay them annual goods for 12 years. The treaty established boundaries for the land cession and hunting rights for the tribes within it. It aimed to resolve the contested land claims through negotiated cession in exchange for annuities.
