Winnebago Tribe

The Winnebago, or Ho-Chunk (Hoocak, "People of the Big Voice"), are a Chiwere Siouan-speaking people whose homeland centered on the four lakes region of present-day south-central Wisconsin. They are the only Siouan-speaking people indigenous to the western Great Lakes region. The Ho-Chunk entered into treaties with the United States that ceded their Wisconsin territories and led to multiple forced relocations. Despite repeated removals, many Ho-Chunk persistently returned to Wisconsin. Today, the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska maintain separate tribal governments.
