Treaty

Treaty with the Shawnee, 1825

This 1825 treaty was between the U.S. and the Shawnee tribe in Missouri regarding lands near Cape Girardeau. The Shawnee ceded their claims to these lands, from which they had earlier relocated. In exchange, the U.S. granted the Shawnee a 50 square mile tract west of Missouri. The U.S. also agreed to pay the Shawnee $14,000 and provide animals, farming tools, and provisions to compensate for their relocation and settlement losses. The treaty aimed to fully indemnify the Shawnee and renew friendship between the tribe and U.S.
