Sioux of the Lakes
The Sioux of the Lakes refers to the western Dakota bands—primarily the Sisseton and Wahpeton—who inhabited the lake and prairie country of present-day western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota. They occupied the headwaters region of the Minnesota and Des Moines rivers and the lake country stretching to the Coteau des Prairies. These bands engaged in treaty negotiations with the United States as part of the post-War of 1812 peace settlements, agreeing to terms that established formal diplomatic relations and trade frameworks with the American government.
