Yankton Sioux Tribe
The Yankton, or Ihanktonwan, are a Nakota-speaking division of the Oceti Sakowin whose homeland centered on the pipestone quarries of southwestern Minnesota and the James and Missouri river valleys of present-day South Dakota. They were known as skilled diplomats and traders who served as intermediaries between the eastern Dakota and western Lakota divisions. The Yankton had a notably friendly meeting with the Lewis and Clark Expedition in August 1804 near present-day Yankton, South Dakota. They subsequently entered into treaties with the United States, and today the Yankton Sioux Tribe is headquartered at Wagner, South Dakota.
